This morning the first race in a three race series was held at Graham Swamp Preserve. This series of trail races is for kids only, and this is the first time this event has ever been held.  There are plans for two more races, this year at other local parks in Flagler County, but the dates have yet to be announced.

Seventy kids were signed up to run this morning in a trail race along Graham Swamp Preserve. The age range for the kids allowed to participate were 3-13. The races started off with the first age group, ages 3-5 who ran a 0.3 mile course along the trails. Parents were allowed to run with their youngsters, and the trail run was led by multiple adults, with adults stationed along the trails to point kids in the right direction. The top three boys and the top three girls were recognized with awards, and many of these little guys finished their run in about 3-4 minutes.

The largest of the age groups was the 6-9 year old kids. This group ran a 1.3 miles course, again led by adults, and parents were allowed to run with their kids. The top three boys and the top three girls from this age bracket were also recognized with awards, and the top runners finished within about 14-15 minutes.

The last age range to run was the 10-13 year old kids. They had the toughest course to run at just a hair under 3 miles. Their course spanned partially onto the mountain bike trail. This was led by adults as well, to ensure no one got lost along the course. The top three boys and the top three girls from this age bracket were also recognized with awards after the race.

Once kids finished their race, they were welcome to grab a Swillerbee’s donut, some water, Gatorade, orange slices, or even popcorn. Music played during the races and a wild boar mascot danced around entertaining adults and kids alike.

Parents and kids were both excited for a trail race that was geared for the kids, they cannot wait to sign up for the next race once it is announced. The host, even mentioned that there was a wait-list of kids who wanted to run.
