Two community events this summer will connect Flagler County parents with VPK providers, enrollment help, and early learning resources — all at no cost.
The Flagler County Education Foundation, along with the Early Learning Coalition of Flagler & Volusia Counties and the Community Foundation and United Way of Volusia Flagler Counties, will host two “Launch to Learning” events in July. The events are designed to help families learn about Florida’s Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) program and get assistance with enrollment.
“Kindergarten readiness starts before the first day of school,” said Teresa M. Rizzo, executive director of the Flagler County Education Foundation. “These events are an opportunity for families to learn what VPK offers, meet local providers and get help taking the next step toward enrollment.”
The first event will be held on Saturday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to noon at GW Carver Gym, 206 East Drain St., Bunnell. The second event will follow on Saturday, July 18, also from 10 a.m. to noon, at Hidden Trails Community Center, 6108 Mahogany Blvd., Bunnell.
At both events, families can meet private VPK providers, learn about Flagler Schools’ VPK options, get hands-on help with VPK registration, and access resources for parents of children from birth to age 5. Kona Ice will also be on-site at both locations.
Organizers point to research supporting the long-term value of quality early childhood education. A landmark study known as the HighScope Perry Preschool Project found that 66% of children who participated in an early education program graduated from high school, compared to 45% of those who did not. The study also found that 36% of participants owned a home by adulthood, versus 13% of nonparticipants, and that participants had fewer arrests over time, including drug-related arrests.
