An Ormond Beach man who was arrested twice in April by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office following a domestic disturbance has been convicted and sentenced to a decade in prison.
On April 2, deputies arrested William Powers, 35, of Ormond Beach for felony battery after an incident in which he slammed the victim’s head into the ground, causing a cracked skull and brain bleed. Although it was initially reported that the victim had fallen, investigation by the FCSO Major Case Unit revealed Powers had tampered with the victim and instructed the victim to provide a false testimony to mislead law enforcement, leading to Powers’ arrest and an additional charge of tampering with a victim.

During a continued investigation after Powers bonded out of jail, detectives determined Powers was stalking the victim and violating his pretrial order of no contact. In a two-week span, Powers repeatedly texted the victim, contacted the victim’s family and friends, and attempted to set up surveillance on the victim’s home. As a result, Powers was arrested a second time on April 17 for aggravated stalking and violation of pretrial release conditions, and the bond for his original felony battery charge was revoked.
On Aug. 20, Powers pleaded no contest to all charges. At a sentencing hearing on Sept. 8, Circuit Judge Dawn Nichols found him guilty on each count and sentenced him to 10 years in state prison, followed by 10 years of probation.
“This violent abuser is dangerous and deserved every bit of the sentence he received,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “Now that he is spending the next decade locked up, I hope the victim will have some peace knowing he can’t bring them any more pain. I commend our deputies and Major Case Unit for the hard work they put into this case, and I thank the State Attorney’s Office for prosecuting this violent offender and Judge Nichols for giving him the sentence he deserved before he killed this victim or someone else by his violent actions.”
Powers is being held at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility. He is awaiting transfer to Florida Department of Corrections custody.
