A new traffic signal has been installed at the intersection of U.S. 1 and County Road 13 in Bunnell, bringing a long-anticipated safety improvement to a busy crossroads used by thousands of Flagler County residents and visitors each year. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) installed the signal as part of a larger road improvement project along a nearly six-mile stretch of U.S. 1 running through Palm Coast and Bunnell.

Current Status and What Drivers Should Expect

As of March 5, the signal is operating in flash mode, which serves as a temporary alert system to help drivers adjust to the presence of a new light before it is fully activated. FDOT says full activation is expected within approximately two weeks. While the signal is flashing, drivers approaching the intersection are urged to slow down, stay alert, and proceed with caution. Motorists should yield to any pedestrians, bicyclists, or vehicles already in the intersection and make sure the roadway is clear before moving through.

Why the Signal Matters

County Administrator Heidi Petito highlighted the practical benefits the signal will bring to the community, particularly for those accessing the Flagler County Fairgrounds and nearby extension services. “This light will make it much easier to navigate to the Fairgrounds for major events that are held there, including the rodeos throughout the year and the Flagler County Fair and Youth Show,” Petito said. “It will also make it easier for those participating in programs offered by the UF|IFAS Extension.”

The Flagler County Fairgrounds hosts some of the area’s most heavily attended public events, and the intersection at U.S. 1 and County Road 13 has historically seen increased traffic volume during those times. The new signal is expected to help manage that traffic more safely and efficiently.

Part of a Broader FDOT Project

The new signal is one component of a larger FDOT initiative to improve safety and accessibility along the nearly six-mile U.S. 1 corridor that passes through both Palm Coast and Bunnell. The overall project was expected to be completed in early 2026, though FDOT noted that weather or other unforeseen circumstances could affect the timeline.

Flagler County officials expressed appreciation to FDOT for the improvement. More details about the project, including progress updates, are available at www.cflroads.com/project/445216-1.
