Christmas with Community Heroes will hold its 17th annual Christmas shopping event supporting local children in need, continuing a tradition that began in founder Larry Jones’s kitchen in 2008.
The organization will support 100 local children between the ages of 4 and 12 this year. Flagler Schools guidance counselors recommend the children, identifying families facing hardship during the holiday season based on their firsthand knowledge of student circumstances.
Each participating child receives $150 to shop for gifts at Walmart and is paired with a “Community Hero” who accompanies them during the shopping experience. The heroes help children select items, stay within budget, and ensure they feel supported and celebrated during the event.
Community Heroes include firefighters, nurses, teachers, law enforcement officers, veterans, local business owners, volunteers, government leaders, elected officials, medical professionals, nonprofit leaders, first responders, and community members who want to give back to families in need.
“Our Community Heroes come from every corner of Flagler County,” said founder Larry Jones. “But on this night, they are all the same – someone who believes every child deserves joy.”
The organization’s mission centers on one simple principle: every child deserves a magical Christmas. What started as a small effort in Jones’s kitchen has grown into a cherished Flagler County holiday tradition that brings together volunteers, educators, and community supporters to make Christmas brighter for families experiencing difficult circumstances.
Community members can support the effort through financial donations or volunteering. Checks can be made payable to CWCH and mailed to the organization, or donations can be submitted via PayPal at @cwchflagler. Those interested in volunteering to help shop or wrap gifts can email cwchflagler@gmail.com.

The organization has invited the media to join the festive celebration at Walmart to witness the shopping event. The annual tradition demonstrates the community’s commitment to ensuring no child is left behind during the holiday season.
Founded by retired Sergeant Larry Jones in 2008, Christmas with Community Heroes has served as what organizers describe as a beacon of hope for children in Flagler County. The initiative relies on collaboration between volunteers, educators, and community supporters to provide holiday assistance to families facing financial challenges.
The 17-year history of the program reflects sustained community engagement in supporting local children during the Christmas season. The consistent participation of various community professionals and volunteers allows the organization to maintain its mission of bringing holiday magic to children who might otherwise go without gifts or special experiences during Christmas.
