December 22, 2023, Rymfire Elementary School cut the ribbon on their new state of the art Sensory room for students. This is the first sensory room to be officially opened up for use. There are sensory rooms in every school in Flagler County although some are still under construction, with others just waiting on staff training to finish.

These sensory rooms will be a great addition to students, as many have students here have significant sensory needs, according to Tammy Yorke. Tammy was the coordinator who worked to get all of the funding through federal grants. Tammy said, “We allocated $50,000 per school in Federal COVID money for these rooms. This was an opportunity for us to do something really fantastic but not impact our school budgets.”

Superintendent LaShakia Moore stated, “I am so excited that we were able to provided an opportunity to have this. Sensory rooms are so expensive and we are thankful that we were able to do this. I know are students are going to benefit from them. I can imagine so many students that will be able to use this as a space to get themselves regulated and set for learning.”

The Sensory Room project at Flagler Schools is funded through the ESSER III grant which helps address the specific needs of students with disabilities. This is a project that began roughly two years ago. Parents will also be able to elect whether they want their children to experience the sensory rooms or not.
