Daniel VanDeusen has been named the permanent Deputy Chief of Flagler County Fire Rescue, becoming the first person in the department’s history to rise from probationary firefighter to the second-highest rank.
Fire Rescue Chief Michael Tucker announced the promotion effective January 11, 2026. VanDeusen had been serving as Interim Deputy Chief since October.
“As the first individual within FCFR to move from the position of probationary firefighter to the rank of Deputy Chief, he has become recognized as someone willing to do the hard work necessary in developing himself to take on new responsibilities,” Tucker wrote in his memo to Fire Rescue personnel. “In the process, he has become the type of leader that FCFR needs.”
VanDeusen joined Flagler County Fire Rescue in 2005 as a probationary Firefighter EMT. Over the past two decades, he has worked his way up through every rank in the department to reach his current position.
VanDeusen expressed his commitment to the new role. “I embrace the opportunities and challenges of this position,” VanDeusen said. “I look forward to assisting Chief Tucker with his plans to grow and improve Fire Rescue and provide the very best for our residents.”
Chief Tucker emphasized that personal and professional development is key to achieving the department’s goals, noting that VanDeusen has consistently demonstrated this priority throughout his career.
“Deputy Chief VanDeusen has always supported and encouraged our men and women to reach their full potential,” Tucker said. “He not only talks the talk, but he also walks the walk.”
