The City of Palm Coast is navigating a leadership change as Deputy City Manager Lauren Johnston prepares to leave for other professional opportunities. Fire Chief Kyle Berryhill has been appointed to fill the role on an interim basis while the city searches for a permanent replacement.
Johnston’s Departure
Johnston has served the City of Palm Coast through a significant period of transition, most notably acting as City Manager for nearly two years before Mike McGlothlin was hired for the permanent position in December 2025. During that stretch, she managed day-to-day operations, advanced key city initiatives, and ensured residents continued to receive essential services.
City Manager McGlothlin acknowledged her contributions. “Lauren stepped up when our organization needed her most, and her leadership helped carry us forward during an important time for Palm Coast,” McGlothlin said. “We are grateful for her many contributions and wish her continued success in her next chapter.”
Berryhill Named Interim Deputy City Manager
Effective Monday, March 30, 2026, McGlothlin has appointed Fire Chief Kyle Berryhill as Interim Deputy City Manager. Berryhill joined the Palm Coast Fire Department in 2005 and has spent more than 20 years with the city, advancing through the ranks as Lieutenant, Captain, and Battalion Chief before being appointed Fire Chief in 2022. He also serves as the city’s Incident Commander during emergency activations, including hurricanes and severe weather events.
McGlothlin expressed confidence in the appointment. “Kyle’s leadership, experience, and ability to perform under pressure make him exceptionally well-suited for this role,” he said. “He has a proven track record of leading through critical situations and a deep understanding of our organization. I am confident in his ability to help guide our team as we continue moving forward.”
Fire Department Continuity
With Berryhill stepping into the interim deputy city manager role, Deputy Fire Chief Bradd Clark will serve as Interim Fire Chief to ensure uninterrupted leadership within the Palm Coast Fire Department during the transition period.
Search for a Permanent Replacement
The city’s Human Resources team is working with McGlothlin to finalize the recruitment process for the permanent Deputy City Manager position. When the role is formally posted, it will be promoted both internally and externally. The city has stated its commitment to attracting and selecting the most qualified candidate for the position.
