A local historian will examine how false stories about the Civil War era continue to influence American politics during a public talk next month in Flagler County.
Dr. Michael Butler, Kenan Distinguished Professor of History and Chair of Humanities at Flagler College, will speak at the American Association of University Women Flagler County meeting on Saturday, February 7 at 10:00 a.m. at Cypress Knoll Golf Club. The event celebrates Black History Month and is open to the public.
Dr. Butler’s presentation, titled “A Lesson From Reconstruction: The Political Consequences of Rewriting History,” will examine the end of the Reconstruction era following the Civil War. This period, which historians consider important but often overlooked, saw Southern states regain political control of their region. That shift led to voting restrictions, Jim Crow laws, and racial violence directed at African Americans.
The talk will address how Southerners used what Dr. Butler describes as historical lies to justify these actions. Over time, these false narratives became widely accepted as fact across the nation. Dr. Butler plans to explain the “Lost Cause” mythology and discuss why such narratives remain relevant to what he calls anti-democratic forces in 2026.
