National Weather Service course teaches residents to identify and report severe weather

Flagler County Emergency Management will host a free Skywarn Storm Spotter class on Monday, February 2, allowing residents to learn how to identify severe weather and become part of a nationwide network of trained volunteers.

The class will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Flagler County Emergency Operations Center, located at 1769 E. Moody Boulevard, Building 3, in Bunnell. A meteorologist from the National Weather Service will lead the training session.

The course covers the basics of storm spotting, including how to recognize cloud formations that indicate severe weather, what conditions qualify as severe weather, and how to properly identify and report dangerous weather situations to authorities.

“This training will teach you how to identify severe weather, recognize key cloud formations, and report critical weather conditions,” said Emergency Management Director Jonathan Lord. “By completing the class, you’ll become part of a nationwide network of trained volunteers who help improve weather reporting and community safety.”

Weather observers who complete the training often assist the National Weather Service as storm spotters, supporting both local emergency management and federal weather services by providing on-the-ground reports during severe weather events.

Pre-registration is required for the class. Residents can sign up at FlaglerCounty.gov/Emergency by clicking on “Community Training.” Those without internet access can call 386-313-4200 to register by phone.
