Inmates wrap 53-foot trailer as part of workforce development partnership

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and Flagler Technical College are collaborating on a project that highlights workforce training opportunities while helping inmates acquire job skills.

Participants in the Sheriff’s Office Homeward Bound program recently completed printing and wrapping a 53-foot-long trailer for the Commercial Truck Driving program at Flagler Technical College. The work was done by inmates in the Vinyl Applications class at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility.

Fifth Year of Program

The Homeward Bound program is now in its fifth year. It offers job training to inmates at the detention facility in Bunnell. The Vinyl Applications class is the oldest program provided through the initiative.

The newly decorated trailer serves as a promotional tool for the technical college’s truck driving program while demonstrating the skills inmates can learn while incarcerated.

Program Presentation

Officials from both organizations attended the presentation of the wrapped trailer. Those present included FTC Director Renee Swaggerty, FTC Assistant Director Chris McDermott, and FCSO Chief of Court and Detention Services Division Dan Engert. Workers and trainers from both institutions also participated in the event.

Other Training Programs Available

The Homeward Bound Initiative offers several other workforce training programs to inmates beyond vinyl applications. These programs include:

  • HVAC Apprenticeship
  • Culinary Food Management
  • Electrician Pre-Apprenticeship
  • Basic Auto Body Collision and Prep for Painting (launched this year)

Purpose of Partnership

The collaboration between the Sheriff’s Office and Flagler Technical College helps promote workforce training in Flagler County. The program aims to provide inmates with marketable job skills they can use after their release.

By wrapping the commercial truck driving trailer, inmates gained hands-on experience in vinyl application while helping the technical college advertise one of its career training programs.

The partnership represents an ongoing effort to connect job training resources with individuals who can benefit from learning new skills during their incarceration.
