Young athletes from Spartan Academy, based in Palm Coast, brought home international recognition last month with standout performances at two of the most prestigious Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in the world: The European Kids IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Florence, Italy, and the IBJJF World Championship in Long Beach, California.

Spartan Academy’s youth team delivered exceptional results at the European Kids’ Championship, which draws top competitors from across Europe, Asia, South America, and North America. Camilla Stone (age 12) and Connor Stone (age 11) both earned gold medals in their divisions, while Ayub Umar (age 10) took home a silver medal after a standout performance against tough international opponents.

These results are part of Spartan Academy’s youth and teen competition program, which continues to develop athletes capable of performing at the highest level. One clear example is Calvin DuBose, who began his jiu-jitsu journey at Spartan Academy in 2020 as a white belt in the kids’ class. After progressing through the entire youth program, Calvin now trains in the adult program and, a few days ago, competed in the 2025 IBJJF World Championship, the most prestigious Gi jiu-jitsu tournament in the sport.
At just 15 years old, Calvin entered the Juvenile Blue Belt division for the first time and earned a bronze medal, placing him among the best young athletes in the world. His performance reflects not only his dedication but also the strength of Spartan Academy’s long-term athlete development.

Led by Professor Igor Mancebo, a 2nd-degree black belt, Spartan Academy has grown into a recognized force in youth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The academy’s structured and competitive program, known for its discipline, detailed instruction, and strong team culture, continues to earn respect both nationally and internationally.
Spartan Academy is also proud to be affiliated with the Renato Tavares Association, a respected Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu association committed to high-level instruction and athlete development.
“What’s most rewarding is seeing our students evolve — from learning their first technique as kids to standing on podiums at the biggest tournaments in the world,” said Professor Igor. “This is the result of years of hard work, a strong system, and a team that believes in what we’re building.”
With an ever-growing competition team, consistent success, and a youth program that attracts families across Flagler County and beyond, Spartan Academy continues to raise the standard for martial arts education and competition in the region.
