As the holiday season gets underway, the Palm Coast Fire Department has launched its annual Project Green Wreath campaign, a fire prevention initiative designed to raise awareness about safety during one of the most dangerous times of year for house fires.
The program, which runs throughout December, features large wreaths displayed at all five of the city’s fire stations. Each wreath is fitted with green light bulbs, and firefighters will swap out one green bulb for a red one every time a structure fire occurs in the community during the month.
“Project Green Wreath is a visual reminder of the importance of implementing and following fire safety practices during the holiday season,” said Palm Coast Fire Chief Kyle Berryhill. “We hope everyone will do their part to keep the wreaths green!”
The campaign serves as a simple but powerful way for residents to track fire incidents in real time while being reminded to take precautions in their own homes.
Fire officials are urging residents to be especially careful with holiday decorations, cooking, and electrical equipment during this time of year. Key recommendations include avoiding overloaded circuits and damaged light strings, keeping live Christmas trees well-watered and away from heat sources, and never leaving candles or stovetop cooking unattended. The department also reminds residents to test their smoke alarms to ensure they are working properly.
The holiday season traditionally sees a spike in residential fires due to increased use of electrical decorations, more time spent cooking, and the presence of flammable items like Christmas trees and wrapping paper in homes.
