A former home healthcare nurse will serve seven years in the Florida Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to abusing a disabled adult under his care.

Judge Nichols sentenced John Jenkins during a hearing on Monday morning following his conviction on four counts of abuse of a disabled adult. Jenkins pleaded guilty to all charges earlier this year.

“This sentencing sends a clear message: abusing vulnerable or disabled adults will not be tolerated, especially if you are a caregiver,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “This offender’s actions were cruel, deliberate, and inexcusable, and seven years in prison reflects the seriousness of his crime. I commend our investigators and the prosecutors in the case, and I hope this sentencing brings closure to the victim and the victim’s family.”

The case involved Jenkins’s actions while working as a home healthcare nurse, a position that placed him in direct care of vulnerable individuals. The conviction on four separate counts of abuse indicates multiple incidents or forms of mistreatment of the disabled adult victim.

By pleading guilty to all charges, Jenkins avoided a trial and accepted responsibility for his actions. The guilty plea typically allows for more certain sentencing outcomes while sparing victims from having to testify about their experiences in court.

The seven-year prison sentence represents a significant penalty for abuse of a disabled adult, reflecting the severity with which the justice system treats crimes against vulnerable populations. Caregivers hold positions of trust and authority over individuals who depend on them for basic needs and safety, making abuse in such situations particularly egregious.

Sheriff Staly’s statement emphasized both the investigative work that led to the conviction and the impact on the victim and their family. The conclusion of the case through sentencing provides what law enforcement hopes will be closure for those affected by Jenkins’s actions.

The case highlights the importance of accountability for those in caregiving positions and the legal system’s commitment to protecting vulnerable adults from abuse by those entrusted with their care.
