Following a two-and-a-half-year investigation, Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Major Case Unit detectives arrested a 32-year-old Maine man for threatening to kill a Flagler County resident and their family through messages sent over the Xbox network.

In November 2022, detectives began investigating a series of threats reported by a Palm Coast resident. According to the victim, who was a juvenile at the time, an unknown suspect using an anonymous Xbox gamertag sent multiple messages containing violent threats, including threatening to kill the victim, burn their house down, and make their parents disappear.

The victim told deputies they had received similar threats from the same suspect under a different Xbox Gamertag in July 2022. Following the threats, the victim attempted to block the suspect, but the suspect repeatedly altered their profile to continue the harassment. The victim stated they had never met the suspect but had interacted with them through Xbox and Snapchat.

In January 2025, detectives identified the suspect through investigative means as James Maynard, 32, of Pittsfield, Maine. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant and, on April 25, traveled to Maine, where they worked with the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office and Waterville Police Department to locate, apprehend, and interview Maynard.

Maynard was arrested on the outstanding fugitive warrant for Written or Electronic Threats to Kill. He was transported to the Kennebec County Correctional Facility in Augusta, Maine. He will later be extradited to Flagler County.

“I commend our Major Case Unit for their hard work and dedication during this extensive over two-year investigation,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “Let this case be a warning that Flagler County Sheriff’s Office does not tolerate any threat to kill, and we will work with our law enforcement partners across the country to find you and hold you accountable if you threaten our residents. I also want to thank the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office and Waterville Police Department for their assistance in this case.”
