City Repertory Theatre will present “Around the World in Eighty Days,” a comedy adventure that transforms Jules Verne’s famous novel into a high-energy theatrical experience with just five actors playing every role.

The adaptation by playwright Mark Brown features five performers who portray 31 different characters, including an elephant, in a fast-paced production designed to keep audiences laughing throughout the show.

This marks CRT’s second production of the play. The theater first discovered the script during COVID and staged it outdoors at the Stage at Town Center in 2021. The show was well-received, but only three performances were offered, limiting the number of people who could attend. Now, in celebration of the theater’s 15th season, Artistic Director John Sbordone has brought back some of the original cast members and added new performers.

The cast includes company regulars Cameron Hodges as Phileas Fogg, Beau Wade as Detective Fix, Danno Waddell as Passepartout, Agata Sokólska-Lee as Aouda, and newcomer Khloe Perez-Mathis.

“The original cast and I had enormous fun putting together our 2021 production outside under the tent during COVID,” Sbordone recalled. “Our audiences adored the Jules Verne adventure and we wanted to revisit the show for a full 2 weekend run, indoors at CRT.”

The play has received strong reviews from major publications. The New York Times called it “smart enough to make sophisticated adults laugh out loud and shamelessly silly enough to keep children in the audience interested and entertained.” Orlando Weekly described it as “high-spirited, fast-moving and flat-out hilarious!”
