Tuesday evening, while directing traffic at the scene of a vehicle vs scooter accident, 82-year-old Stephen Brooks was struck by a car near the intersection of Seminole Woods and Sesame Blvd. Flagler County Fire Rescue, Florida Highway Patrol, and Flagler County Sheriff were still all on the scene, and he was deemed a trauma alert and FireFlighted to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach. Currently, he is Conscious while in critical but stable condition. According to Palm Coast Fire Chief Berryhill, he sustained internal injuries as well as at least four broken bones. Berryhill had stated they were planning on visiting him shortly after the press conference yesterday afternoon.
Stephen Brooks previously held a career in the Railroad in Utah, where he also served as a volunteer firefighter as assistant chief. “We never want to see the blood of our family on the streets but we did yesterday,” Chief Berryhill said in an emotional statement. He continued, “We are grateful for the prayers and well wishes of the community, and we continue to ask for those, with the additional ask that residents are careful around accident scenes”.
The driver of the vehicle that struck Stephen Brooks did stay on scene, and any updates on that investigation will come from Florida Highway Patrol. Chief Berryhill did say that this accident happened at sunset, with the sun causing extremely blinding conditions for drivers, and he expressed his opinion that he did not think there was any malice behind this accident.
The original victim in the initial accident was transported locally to a hospital under a non-trauma status.
