By-Line: Larry Jones, Founder of Christmas with Community Heroes
Christmas is a time for giving and for retired Sgt. Larry Jones, it has become a 16-year tradition. Founded in 2008 from his dining room table, Larry and his dedicated team—Caroline McNeil, Kathy Vasquez, and Lacy Martin—have been working tirelessly behind the scenes as Santa’s elves, bringing holiday cheer to children in Flagler County through Christmas with Community Heroes.
This year, the goal is ambitious: shopping for over 100 needy children. These children are nominated through an application process facilitated by Flagler Schools guidance counselors and teachers, ensuring support reaches those who need it most.
Larry and the team are actively working to raise funds to make this Christmas magical. Each child receives a $150 gift card to be used at Walmart for items of their choosing. To make this possible, the committee calls on the community for donations and volunteers.
The annual shopping event, hosted at our local Walmart, is made possible by the generous support of Walmart employees and store manager Janet Baldwin. Volunteers, including local first responders, medical professionals, educators, and so much more, from near and far, will join the children to shop and wrap presents, creating a heartwarming Christmas wonderland that exemplifies the true spirit of the season.
