The Flagler Sheriff’s Police Athletic League was awarded a grant through the National Rifle Association (NRA) to provide equipment to support the Flagler Sheriff’s Explorers Firearm Safety Training and Competition Project. This program teaches the Explorer’s proper firearm safety, the anatomical parts of the firearms, how to properly take apart and clean firearms, and how to safely engage targets at a shooting range.
The NRA provided five Glock 17 firearms, 24 pairs of protection eyewear, 15 pairs of ear protection, 200 targets, 2,500 rounds of ammunition, five firearm cleaning kits, and one digital range timer for the project.

The Florida Sheriff’s Explorer Association hosts a quarterly Delegates competition with the last one occurring in June 2024. Eight FCSO Explorers competed with Explorer Arjay Shaw placing first in the Sharpshooter competition and Explorer Leiland Salazar placing first in the Tyro Shooting Division. Throughout the year, the Explorers train and travel to compete in all types of Law Enforcement scenarios and practice responding to realistic situations. This prepares Explorers for their future in law enforcement.
“I started my career as an Explorer with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, but at that time it was known as the Youth Deputy Program,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “As a life member of the NRA, we greatly appreciate the grant that positively impacts our youth and also teaches them how to safely handle a firearm.”
