From the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office:
Over the weekend, Deputy Manka observed a man lying on his back on the sidewalk along US-1 and stopped to conduct a welfare check. Shortly after, Deputy First Class Jenkins arrived to assist. During the check, they learned that the man and his wife had not eaten in two days. The man had been attempting to walk to Publix to get food, but appeared to be confused and sick from lack of food and water, and was unable to make it to the store. The couple was transported to the hospital by Flagler County Fire Rescue.
Mental Health Specialist Shaw of FCSO’s Behavioral Response Unit advised the deputies that she would be following up to assist the couple with community resources, but that there was not much that could be done until Monday morning. Not wanting to leave them without help until Monday, Deputy Manka, DFC Jenkins, and MHS Shaw immediately pulled money from their own pockets and pitched in to purchase groceries that could sustain them until they could get access to community resources on Monday. Together, they delivered the groceries to the hospital.
Our deputies and support staff are proud to serve our community and never expect anything in return. Those involved didn’t even know we’d be posting about this! But their selflessness and quick thinking deserve notice, so we’re proud to share this story with you.
