The story of Jax is one of heartache and happy endings. Jax was initially starved and beaten by his owner. SMART was notified of the situation and went to pick up him. When SMART made it to Jax, that is when they discovered that he was unable to stand more than 4-5 seconds before he fell over; due to his frail nature and malnourished state of being. SMART’s founder, Caroline Johnson, immediately took Jax to the vet, East Coast Animal Hospital, where they kept him for the rest of the day.
Jax was given surgery to deal with an infected wound, that was the result of living in a dirt filled cage with no bottom and bedding. During the surgery the vet cleaned out the wound and closed it up properly to ensure it would heal.
Caroline Johnson fostered Jax for weeks, helping him to gain 20 pounds within the first month he was with her. This was when Caroline started looking for his forever home.
Enter Eric and Steve. Eric and Steve had adopted Bambi from Caroline and SMART years ago and had given her a good and loving home. Bambi had just recently passed away, leaving Eric and Steve heartbroken. In honor of Bambi they decided to adopt another dog from Caroline and SMART, which was beautiful timing, as Jax had just been cleared by the vet and was ready for adoption.
Jax’s happy ending started when Caroline and SMART responded to rescue him from his horrible living conditions, and it continued on when Eric and Steve stepped up to give him the life and home he deserved.
